Ferrari in The Times Business
In the Business section of The Times today, there is an excellent half-page feature by Chris Johnston who recently had the chance to visit Maranello to see the new facilities unveiled by Ferrari President, Mr Luca di Montezemolo. During his visit, Chris had the benefit of seeing the new production line on which the beautiful new Ferrari California will be created and also the outstanding architectural innovations of the new staff restaurant and other facilities which have been a core part of the Formula Uomo project to enhance the working environment. Some of the positive comments Chris makes about Ferrari’s current business model are:
The company, which has 2,800 employees in total, makes its own engines, which are fashioned from a single block of aluminium and employ the skills of 12 workers, making it one of the few carmakers to build all the components that go into its vehicles on one site.
When Mr di Montezemolo became Ferrari president in 1993, turnover stood at €230 million and the company made a €3.8 million loss. Last year, turnover hit €1.67 billion, producing a profit of €266 million.
On that basis, it would be more profitable than Porsche, often thought of as the world’s most profitable carmaker.
